There is no shade on the trail and it is mostly uphill. With lots of breaks it took us an hour to get to the top. My son complained some, but he kept going. We told him to focus on the tree at the top and look how the closer we got the bigger it was getting. He was also entertained by horses, other people and their dogs.
Once at the top the view is amazing. There are nice benches were you can sit and enjoy the view. There is also picnic benches where we had lunch and rested.
You can either go back down the same way you came or go back the down the back of the hill on the Poison Oak Trail which is shady. This is what we did.
The difficulties are the park at the bottom that the kids want to go to that you have to walk past and then when you promise we will do it on the way back you might be too tired to want to stop there, the steep trail, and the sun if it is a warm day.
So tell me have you ever hiked the Horsethief Canyon Trail?
