As a parents it is our responsibility to teach our kids to live a healthy life. From the things we eat to activities that we do our children are watching us. We are their example on how to live. That is why my husband and I have started them early with good eating habits and the love for being outdoors. Sure we have the occasional fast food and treats, but here is the thing, we don't keep that food inside the house. If we want a special treat it has to be an outing or a celebration. I know that having junk food in the house the temptation is too much for us.
Here are my tips in keeping the family healthy:
TURN OFF THE TV - it is important that children play with their toys. Don't worry about the mess they make as long they are playing. I tell my kids if they are going to run around the house they have to pick up everything off the floor first so that nobody gets hurt. I save TV time for when I am cooking dinner or have an important phone call to make. If it is a rainy day I let the kids play Wii Sports which gets them moving. It is okay for the kids to get bored that is how their imaginations start flowing and they can create a new game or role play.
SHOP SMART - Buy lots of fruit and veggies for snacks along with whole grain cereals and crackers. Start off slowly in changing your habits by cutting down the junk food. Start with three treat items a week and then go down to two and slowly change to one so that it is not drastic. I still buy ice cream but usually now every other month. Its okay to have desserts and treats, but in moderation. If you have a lot of sweets around the house it makes it easy to just pass by and take one bite.
MAKE A MEAL PLAN - Let your child plan one meal. You can make this weekly or monthly, but teach them to think on what should be on the plate. I was proud of my son that when I first asked him what he would like for dinner he said mac and cheese, but then added broccoli for a veggie.
PLAN OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES - When the day is nice get out and take the kids hiking! There are many short trails in your neighborhood that you can take and start the kids early. The best thing about hiking is that it is at your pace. Hikers don't run or rush to things. They walk, observe, and enjoy the scenery.
EAT TOGETHER - Make it a habit that you eat together one meal a day and talk about each others day. This creates a bond in the family and you will learn about each other. Take your time eating your meal and don't have any distractions.
